A summer wedding sounds like a dream, and it often is. Long days and gorgeous sunshine can make your big day truly unforgettable. But there’s one little guest that always turns up uninvited during summer: the heat. No one wants to be a sweaty mess in their wedding photos but luckily with a bit of planning, you can keep everyone cool and comfortable from start to finish. Leading wedding experts, The Foxy Hen explains how.
Time it Right
The hottest part of the day usually falls between 12pm and 3pm. If you're having an outdoor ceremony, try to avoid that midday window. A late afternoon or early evening ceremony is often ideal. Not only will the light be softer and more flattering for photos, but your guests won’t be squinting and sweating in their seats either.
If you’re going for a full-day celebration, think about having the ceremony indoors or under cover, then move the party outside once the sun starts to ease off.
Shade is a Lifesaver
If any part of your day is happening outside, you’ll need some shade. Parasols, marquees, trees, or even a stretch tent can make all the difference. Offer handheld fans or paper parasols to guests as a fun and practical keepsake. They look lovely in photos and provide instant relief from the sun.
Make sure there’s also shade at the drinks station, the food area, and anywhere people might queue or linger. It’s those small touches that show guests you’ve thought of everything.
Dress Cool and Stay Fresh
Your outfit matters more than you might think when it comes to staying cool. Lightweight fabrics like chiffon, linen, and cotton breathe much better than heavy satin or tulle. Brides might want to consider a dress with a shorter hemline or an open back, and grooms can skip the waistcoat or opt for lighter suits in shades like stone, pale grey, or even soft blue.
Let your bridal party know it’s fine to keep things breezy too. No one wants to pass out during the group photos. For makeup, think long-wear products, mattifying primers, and setting sprays. A small touch-up kit with blotting paper and powder is a good idea to keep on hand.
Hydration Stations
It sounds simple but keeping everyone hydrated is key. A beautiful self-serve drinks station is easy to set up and always a hit. Offer water infused with cucumber, lemon or mint, chilled lemonade, or iced tea. For a little sparkle, add a signature summer cocktail or mocktail to keep things festive.
Avoid drinks that dehydrate, like too much coffee or strong spirits, especially early in the day. Sparkling water with fruit is a crowd-pleaser and keeps things light and fresh.
Cool Extras That Make a Difference
There are a few clever extras that can really elevate comfort levels. Portable fans tucked under tables or by seating areas are a game-changer. A cool-down zone with damp flannels, cooling face mists, or even a mini misting machine will have guests singing your praises.
For outdoor receptions, a basket with suncream, bug spray, and deodorant wipes in the loo can be a thoughtful touch. People might not think to bring those things, but they’ll be grateful you did.
Food for Hot Weather
Keep the menu light and seasonal. Think grilled meats, colourful salads, fresh fruit and cold desserts. Avoid anything too rich or heavy. A late-night ice cream bar or frozen treats can be a fun twist and a welcome refresher once the dancing starts.
Also consider timing. If you’re eating during the hottest part of the day, make sure your catering team has a plan to keep dishes cool and safe to serve.
Keep the Energy Flowing
Finally, plan the day so people aren’t standing in the sun for too long without a break. Alternate seated and shaded moments with more active parts of the day. Let guests wander, rest, and hydrate at their own pace.
A well-paced wedding where everyone feels comfortable, relaxed, and cared for is always the most memorable.
Planning for heat might not be glamorous, but it shows care. And that’s what people will remember. Your guests will thank you, and you’ll get to enjoy your day without worrying about melting makeup or wilting flowers. Cheers to a beautiful, summer wedding that feels just right.
