August/September 2021

Welcome one and all to another issue of Your Sussex Wedding. Here we are, gradually approaching my favourite part of the year where it feels like there’s so much to look forward to (will you be cross if I say I’m excited about Christmas already?). I adore the autumn as colours change and the air starts to cool. Mind you, based on the weather as I write this, the temperatures won’t have far to fall this year! What a great time to get married though. September tends to be far more predictable climate-wise than August and there’s a wonderfully romantic feel of promise just as the seasons begin to change. I love to see what couples and their suppliers come up with in terms of wedding colour palettes at this time of year. Dusky pink paired with rich burgundy is a real treat when embellished with a metallic touch of gold as per our gorgeous styled shoot from page 45.

I’m loving being involved with wedding plans myself as Melissa, my dear friend and editor here at CWM, makes plans to tie the knot next July, with yours truly as bridesmaid – as I may have mentioned once or twice... She’s already chosen her gown, in which she looks stunning. But what we learned from this experience is not to panic if you don’t instantly burst in to tears at the knowledge that it’s the one. If that’s just not you, you’re unlikely to change your entire personally the moment you try on a wedding dress. Sometimes, the knowledge that you’ve chosen your dream attire comes from careful deliberation and a process of trying on all silhouettes to know what suits and what doesn’t. Melissa actually chose a dress that’s the complete opposite to what she thought she’d go for and this is something we as editors hear all the time. Remember: you do you and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

I hope you enjoy this splendid issue and keeep planning!

Royal Pavilion

This breathtaking former royal Regency palace offers a one-of-a-kind wedding venue in the heart of Brighton and Hove’s cultural quarter. One of the most exotically beautiful buildings in Britain it was designed to entice, enrapture and enchant the great, good and grand of George IV’s court.

The Royal Pavilion’s glorious garden is one of the few fully-restored Regency gardens in the country. Groups of flowers emulate jewels against the flourishing evergreens that frame striking views of the palace, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for images of your wedding day.

Your ceremony can take place in the Red Drawing Room, which has a maximum capacity of 44. This beautiful room retains much of George IV’s striking 1820s decorative scheme, incorporating the Royal Pavilion’s distinctive dragon wallpaper and palm-tree pillars. Located on the ground floor it’s not open to the general public and benefits from its own private entrance leading directly from the Regency garden and offering the feel of true exclusivity on your special day.

For evening “I dos” the dazzling Music Room, one of the palace’s most spectacular state rooms, is available. It has space for 90 loved ones who enter via the Pavilion’s grand entrance and are led to the Music Room via the exotic, Chinese-inspired Long Gallery. Its extraordinary interior is lit by nine lotus-shaped chandeliers, with walls decorated with rich red and gold canvases in the Chinoiserie style, supported by painted dragons. The gilded dome ceiling is made up of hundreds of plaster cockleshells creating the illusion of height.

The Royal Pavilion can be hired for your reception even if you’re not holding your ceremony at the venue. The King William IV Room, situated on the first floor offers an elegant setting for day and evening. With handpainted Chinese-style wallpaper and hanging lanterns, it also benefits from a private entrance, its own lobby and a caterer’s kitchen. It can host 80 for a drinks reception, 70 for a standing buffet or 60 for a seated meal.

Expert Q&A: Love and unity

Expert Q&A: Love and unity

We asked Stefan Field of Ceremonies by Stefan (www.ceremoniesbystefan.com) how to include close friends and family members in a wedding ceremony. Read on to find out what he had to say. There are many ways to include your friends and family such as having them enter with the bridal party, deliver a reading or poem, or even asking the talented amongst them to provide a musical element. For me, having them join in as part of a unity ceremony is the perfect way to bring families together and welcome each part of the couple into the fold of the other.
