April/May 2023

April/May 2023

To quote one of my favourite movies, Miss Congeniality, and Rhode Island’s Cheryl, when asked to describe her perfect date: “I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” While hilarious in the context of the film, I do have to agree with her, because she’s perfectly described how I’ve always felt about spring. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I hate, hate, hate hot weather; and while I love the winter, the dark nights can get you down. So, for me spring is the ideal happy medium: not too hot, not too cold. And that’s before we even get started on everything else it brings such as the beauty of new life and the joy of Easter. In short, what a wonderful time of year for a wedding!

We’re particularly blessed in Britain with definition in our seasons so we get to experience spring in all it’s glory where so many countries around the world don’t get to enjoy its subtleties in quite the same way. This is when British blooms come into their own. Think of the oh-so on trend loose wildflower style of bouquet bursting with anemones, tulips, sweet peas, narcissi and ranuculus, not forgetting the eternally popular wedding flower, peonies. Aisle runners featuring the same create the ambience of walking barefoot through a meadow and when transferred to the reception tables they create that wonderful soft English country garden feel. Why not take inspiration for your wedding palette from the hues found in nature throughout the spring months? Lemon, blush, peach, lavender, sage green... the list goes on. What’s more, this year’s Pantone colour of the year Viva Magenta is so versatile it works beautifully alongside pastels as a bold accent.

I could go on, but I’ll leave it to the local professionals as they share their springtime wedding ideas over in Hot Topic from page 67. Plus, when I think of spring weddings, I think of an overabundance of seasonal flowers, and that’s just what we’ve got for you in one of our incredible styled shoots for you this issue starting over on page 53, so dive in.

Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Deans Place, Alfriston

Deans Place Hotel is a four-star country house surrounded by four acres of beautiful gardens. Nestled in the historical village of Alfriston, on the banks of the River Cuckmere in the South Downs National Park, its idyllic location offers a wonderfully picturesque backdrop for any wedding. The venue’s exclusive packages give you the run of the house for the day, with its cosy bar and lounge, a gorgeous restaurant and two bright function rooms offering views of the surrounding landscape. Following your ceremony, you can leave guests to enjoy drinks on the lawn, while you head off to seek some of the endless photo opportunities within the grounds and nearby.

The Hotel dates back more than six centuries and is steeped in history. The team are often asked, “Who is Dean?” But the exact history of the name is a mystery, having been lost throughout the years. One theory is that Deans comes from the old Saxon word Dene, which means lowland. There was also a previous owner who went by the name of John de Dene and owned the estate around 1355.

In the warmer months you can marry beneath the Wedding Garden Gazebo, surrounded by glorious gardens and views of the South Downs. There’s space here for 120 guests to join you. The Alfriston Suite can also accommodate 120 and is the Hotel’s largest function room. With oak floor, oodles of natural light and stunning views it’s a lovely option at any time of year. The Garden Suite is a more intimate ceremony spot for 75 nearest and dearest. A bright and airy space it too offers panoramic views of the South Downs.

The two suites can also host your reception. The Alfriston Suite is neutrally decorated to suit any palette or theme. It can seat 120 guests at round or long banqueting tables for the wedding breakfast. For the evening this space transforms into your party room with wooden dancefloor and inroom bar for up to 200 guests.

The Garden Suite, again ideal for more intimate celebrations, can seat 45 to join you for your first meal together as newlyweds. For the evening do, guests can move through to the Alfriston Suite.

The venue offers a menu tasting for you both, bedrooms for the night before and morning of to get ready, a bridal suite for the two of you on the wedding night, all complimentary, as well as the services of a professional toastmaster on the big day.
