Manchester is the UK’s Marriage-Search Capital, New Research Finds

From searching for the perfect engagement ring to browsing wedding venues and proposal ideas, Brits are increasingly turning to Google when preparing to take the next step in their relationships. But new research has revealed that some UK cities are considerably more marriage-minded online than others.

Manchester has emerged as the UK city with the highest level of marriage-related search interest relative to its population, according to research from Agilis. The city records an estimated 1,540.7 searches per 100,000 residents across terms relating to engagement rings, proposals, wedding planning, marriage advice and civil partnerships.

Plymouth comes in second, with 1,435.6 searches per 100,000 residents, while Leeds takes third place with 1,343.9. Newcastle upon Tyne, Glasgow and Birmingham also feature strongly, with each recording more than 1,300 searches per 100,000 people.

The findings suggest that marriage-related interest is not necessarily greatest in the UK’s biggest cities. London generates by far the highest overall search volume, with an estimated 85,010 monthly searches, but its much larger population means it ranks only tenth when searches are measured per 100,000 residents, at 936.8.

Liverpool follows London at 953.8 searches per 100,000 residents, while Bristol records 1,243.9 and Kingston upon Hull 1,019.2.

At the other end of the scale, Nottingham records just 186.7 marriage-related searches per 100,000 residents, placing it last among the cities analysed.

Jehan Rajendra, Founder at Agilis, said Manchester’s position suggests a strong appetite for information around the next stage of relationships. “Searches for engagement rings, wedding venues and proposal ideas point to a high level of interest not only in getting married, but in how people want that moment to look and feel,” he said.

Agilis analysed Google Keyword Planner data across 20 UK cities and 26 marriage and wedding-related search terms. Search volumes were then measured against each city’s population to create a rate per 100,000 residents, allowing cities of different sizes to be compared. The ranking reflects online search behaviour rather than marriage rates, meaning a city’s position does not necessarily indicate how many people are getting married there.

Rajendra added that differences in search behaviour, demographics and the language people use online could all influence the results. “Marriage is deeply personal, but the way people prepare for it often reflects wider attitudes towards relationships, celebration and commitment,” he said.
